YOUNG PERSON’S GUARANTEE

Summary

The Young Person’s Guarantee is a commitment to connect every 16 to 24 year old in Scotland to a positive opportunity. More information on specific projects funded through the YPG is available within this section.

Making A Difference

The Young Person’s Guarantee has strong links to numerous Community Plan Performance Indicators, such as Workless Households and School Leavers in Positive Destinations. Between 2017-2020 Glasgow’s rate for positive destinations after 9 months increased by 2.4%, moving it from 2nd lowest among recorded Scottish Local Authorities to 13th/31.

The economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected young people, and their ability to access training/education opportunities or enter the labour market. The Young Person’s Guarantee is a response to this, that aims to give all young people the chance to succeed.

The Young Person’s Guarantee is aligned to the principles of No-One Left Behind, delivering flexible, user-based employability support and training to young people aged 16-24 years. It is intended to provide an opportunity tailored to the individual, based on their own personal circumstances and ambitions, such as: going to university or college; joining an apprenticeship programme; undertaking training; accessing fair employment including work experience; or participating in a formal volunteering programme.

Priority is given to those that are considered to be most at risk and have multiple barriers to employment, to help support their engagement, participation, and progression.

The council is working closely with a wide range of local partners to help deliver a comprehensive programme of employability support for all 16-24 year olds, helping them move from school into one of the following destinations:

  • a job
  • an apprenticeship
  • further or higher education
  • a training programme
  • volunteering

Wherever the young person is in their journey to employment these opportunities will support them to progress through the employability pipeline. Find more information on the Young Person’s Guarantee website here.
